oneworld carrier Royal Jordanian (RJ) will likely see a bit of use out of the brand new terminal opening at its home airport in Amman (AMM). The $750,000,000 USD terminal will officially open its doors to the traveling public on March 21, though RJ has already started operating flights to Athens (ATH), Doha (DOH), and Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) out of the new facility as of March 3.
In addition to the new terminal, AMM’s airport management group has invested $100,000,000 USD in upgrades to the existing terminals that include increased space for check-in and improvements to the baggage handling system. Upgrades to the concession facilities and duty free shops are also in the works.
While I’ve never arrived, departed, or transited through AMM, the new terminal looks to be an improvement on the existing facilities based on all the pictures I’ve seen. I’ll be heading to AMM on RJ this April, and I’m hopeful I’ll be able to get a glimpse of the new facility, though chances are slim on that front.
To compare the update with the existing facilities, take a look at this photo of some of AMM’s existing terminal space, which is quite dated in appearance….
and compare it with this rendering of the new terminal. Quite a modern, clean upgrade in my very humble opinion. Assuming the facility lives up to expectations that is.
Hopefully the new improvements planned for the security process at the existing terminals as part of the $100M USD renovation will make the newly announced benefits for oneworld emerald customers for fast track security at select airports (which AMM is included in) much smoother and useful at this facility.
